Life-Love 34: A superb serving of fries

You love French fries, but they are often so badly prepared: soggy, oily, doughy… the list of fry-crimes is long. Because of this, you often hesitate when you order something like a burger – do risk the fries or go with the safe cover of the green salad. Today, however, though you get a tip from a friend that the French fries at the hotel you’re at are amazing. Since you’re in Boston, you order a New England specialty – a lobster roll and some fries. 20 minutes later, as you watch the shadows drift across Boston Harbour from your hotel room window, your hotel room’s doorbell rings and a friendly steward brings your dinner in, on heavy white China and modern looking cutlery. It’s been a long day, so you wolf down the lobster roll and then eye the fries. They look good enough, thin and golden. You pick one up and its edges feel sharp and well-defined. It tapers into a thin wedge at its end. As you bring it to your mouth, sharp whiffs of vinegar and the delicate tang of Old Bay spices. You feel a satisfying crackle as you bite into the fry and the flavours flood your mouth, activating your taste buds and making your tongue tingle with the comfortable pleasure of the starchy potato and the short sharp shock of the vinegar and spice. These fries are heavenly – enjoying the sensual pleasure of eating makes you feel just a little more alive.
