Life-Love 31: A friend who tells you the truth

We like to be liked. Often our friends will spare our feelings by keeping mum about a problematic romantic relationship, a questionable financial choice or a fashion crime. Sometimes, however, a friend will take you aside, shuffle in his or her seat and look down at the ground a little awkwardly. You ask your friend what’s on their mind, and then they look you in the eye and say “I have to tell you something.” At first, you probably feel anger or resentment. You want to lash out and say: “What do you know about me? How could you be so wrong about what’s good for me?”, but after your counter attack, you start to feel the warm spread of truth in your gut. You part company and walk away, feeling hurt and confused. Slowly, your body responds to this hint from someone who truly cares for you, has laughed with you, has been at your bedside when you are sick, has spent hours on the phone when you were hurt by the unkind words of another. Then you start noticing the little things that your friend told you and you know that he or she was right. They have given you the gift of their honesty. It is precious.

  1. I love your posting of today. Real friends are indeed there, as angel guardians, to guide you. You truly have a good friend, especially if he told you the truth in a straightforward manner, but without trying to hurt you but to help you keep moving.
