Life-Love #22: Watching the leaves change colour

Time walks on, the rhythm of its steps is the heartbeat by which we gauge how our lives are going. Some of the most powerful symbols of the passing of the days and the months are all around us, in nature. Spring, summer and winter all bring changes in climate that change our habits, our sense of our bodies and our relationships to others. There is, however, no more powerful marker of life’s little transitions than when the green canopy of the summer forest is set aflame in wave after brilliant wave colour across the countryside. The leaves changing is a harbinger of many things that touch our lives: the crisp, urgent Autumn breeze; the rough and scratchy feel of old woolen sweaters against our skin; the return to new challenges and new friends at school or college. The leaves also usher in the football season with its annual pageant of misty breaths and bundled-up outdoor crowds in full team regalia. The forest’s change their colour and then it spreads all over, a last celebration before we fall into a wintery sleep.
